Abstract:

Evolutionary algorithms, such as genetic algorithm (GA), are used as searching and optimization tools in many scientific and engineering problems. Numerous applications of these methodologies have been reported in relation with optimal operation of reservoirs. The objective of this research was to formulate an optimal water release program for multipurpose serial reservoirs with nonlinear parameters of water inflow and water demand. In this research, we used the technique of genetic algorithm for optimization of the reservoirs of Aras River Basin in northeastern Iran. The objective function was minimization of water demand shortages in required areas and shortages of hydro-electric energy production in power stations of reservoir dams. This research was conducted for hydrologic conditions of deluge, normal rainfall, and drought. Rule curves of the reservoirs were extracted using the genetic algorithm (GA) and the potential shortage levels were determined for each period. Comparison of rule curves of operation obtained from GA shows that, in deluge condition, there will be no shortage of water; in normal condition, there will be a 3% shortage in water supply only in the last three months of the year; and in drought condition, there will be a 10% shortage in all months.
