Resistance in stored rice without lipoxygenase-3 against Indian meal moth Plodia interpunctella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) and its underlying mechanisms

Abstract:Plodia interpunctella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) adults responded positively to volatiles emitted from stored rice with LOX-3 in choice between stored rice with LOX-3 and stored rice without LOX-3. However, there was no significant difference when having the choice between fresh rice with LOX- 3 and without LOX-3. The development and reproductive success of P. interpunctella was not influenced by rice grain LOX-3 presence or absence. The results indicated that the loss of LOX-3 was quite related to the tropism of P. interpunctella, the main volatile pentanal of rice grains during storage might be attractant to P. interpunctella. Rice grain volatiles produced by LOX-3 during storage are attractant to P. interpunctella, if LOX-3 is absent, that would affect the tropism of P. interpunctella.
