Abstract:

A greenhouse experiment was conducted to evaluate GA3 application on ‘Marfona’ potato mini-tubers dormancy breaking during 2008. Five different concentrations (0, 40, 80, 120 and 160 ppm) of GA3 were applied on mini-tubers as completely randomized design with three replications. Sprout number, length of the highest sprout and day needed for sprout emergence were evaluated beyond mini-tubers dormancy alleviation. After tubers planting, some traits were recorded as days needed to emergence and main stems number and height. Tuber number per plant, tubers total weight and mean weight of tubers per plant were measured after harvest. The results showed that GA3 application had significant effects on all traits except sprout and main stem number. GA3 application of 160 ppm reduced the days needed to sprout emergence from 100 to 70 days and increased tuber number per plant from 4 to 7.5 compared to control. Furthermore, 160 ppm GA3 significantly influenced tuber total yield per plant from 150 to 200 g compared with un-treated mini-tubers. In total, it seems that in order to planting the mini-tubers, application of 160 ppm GA3 hastens dormancy breaking and improves emergence and hence leads to more tuber number per plant and ultimately increased yield of ‘Marfona’ potato mini-tubers.
