Concept of an environmentally friendly model home at the Community Nossa Senhora do Livramento-Rural Zone of the City of Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil

Abstract:

Inaccessibility to sanitation, clean water, health care and electricity, together with the lack of opportunities for economic development, are some of the everyday problems of small communities that belong to the state of Amazonas, Brazil. Considering that adjustments of housing in riverside communities may contribute to the improvement of the basic aspects of survival, this study was conducted to develop a conceptual model of an environmentally friendly house at Nossa Senhora do Livramento (Rural Zone of the City of Manaus). The methodology was as follows: a) to evaluate the problems related to the infrastructure of existing houses, b) to investigate and scale environmentally sound technologies to solve these problems and, finally, c) to propose technologies to integrate into a model house plan. As a result of the diagnosis of the community, it was observed that the places for the disposal of waste were cesspools, the source of drinking water from shallow wells was inadequate, only some of the houses had electricity and household waste was collected only after long periods of accumulation. A house plan was then developed by integrating the following technologies: a) the anaerobic treatment of sanitary wastes, b) the collection and storage of rainwater, c) water treatment by filtration, d) composting for the treatment of household waste and e) a hot air outlet at the top of the house. In conclusion, there is the possibility of developing a model of house plan, which is capable of solving some of the problems identified in the Community of Nossa Senhora do Livramento.
