Abstract:

This paper examines the urban information and communication technology and its impacts on sustainable development. The findings are based on the views represented in literature and the relationship between information and communication technology and sustainability in urban development. Therefore, information and communication technology as the main component of the information society should be taken into consideration in sustainable development. In the first step, this study investigates information and communication technology influences on sustainable development in the study area of urban society in the central part of Iran. Therefore, it is necessary to specify the relationship between information and communication technology and sustainable development within sample. This is a survey-method research based on a questionnaire. For this purpose, 384 citizens of the study area have been studied. Structural equation modeling is a statistical technique used to analyze the data and test hypotheses. Upon testing the research hypotheses, some variables are considered as educational opportunities, economic opportunities, availability and accessibility, social communication, social participation, the environment, women and teenagers. Finally, the findings strongly support impacts of information and communication technology on sustainable development in the study area. Since the results are conducted upon hypotheses, variables indicated that there is a direct and meaningful relationship between urban ICT and sustainable development. As a new aspect and due to the emergence of network society, especially the impact of information and communication technology on development, social and environmental sustainability is a crucial component in sustainable development and touching a better life.
