Finite element analysis of a failure in rear-mounted mower pulley

Abstract:

The aim of this study was to analyze the failure of a V-belt pulley in rear-mounted mower used in agriculture. In investigation on failure pulley, optical microscope viewing was used to understand material microstructure. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was to simulate pulley deformation. The examined results showed that the failure type was fracture on input pulley. After optical microscope viewing analysis, it was found that some chemical components of pulley material were lower than standard value. The hardness value of material was determined as 90 HB by hardness test dates. C rate of pulley material was lower than the standard value. It could be stated that this low carbon rate affects the yield strength of the material negatively. Torque and maximum bearing load calculated by pulley power were 176.85 Nm and 7860 N, respectively. After FEA solution process, maximum equivalent stress of 55.331 MPa was determined. The simulation stress results were compared with the yield point of the pulley’s material and found that the maximum stress didn’t exceed the yield point. Hence, as a result of the investigations the failure pulley was determined as material and manufacturing process fault. As a conclusion, according to the experimental and simulation evaluation results, suggestions were made in order to prevent the pulley damage.
