Abstract:

This research will show that in some of the issues of dam-break, which may examine the 2D problem, a 1D formulation provides an excellent solution. In this paper, the formulation of the St.Venant equations developed for rectangular channels of varying widths, are applied to the experimental dam- break studies conducted in converging-diverging flumes. In order to solve the equations which are non-conservation formulations, a simple implicit semi-Lagrangian method is used. The comparison between numerical formulation results and experimental results shows this fact that in spite of a non-conservation formulation; there is a good agreement between experimental and calculated results.
