Abstract:

Six rye varieties with different tolerance to drought at seedling stage were used in the study. Their tolerance to drought at maturity was examined in a pot experiment. Drought conditions were maintained twice: at the moment of flag leaf appearance (2 weeks – 15.5-30.5.2008) and at milk-stage of seeds (1 week – 23.6-30.6.2008). Basic agronomic traits of the tested varieties were compared with those of their control forms. Results show that the tested rye varieties, irrespective of their drought tolerance at seedling stage, under drought conditions at later stages of plant development did not differ significantly in yield components, spike length and plant height but high frequency of plants with higher than control values for the grain number and grain weight per plant, suggest that it may be possible to develop drought tolerant cultivars.
