Abstract:

Drought is a major constraint to crop production worldwide and landraces are one of the important genetic resources to crops improvement in dry areas. In order to evaluate drought tolerance in twenty Iranian fenugreek landraces, this study was carried out during 2007-2008 cropping season under both moisture stress (E1) and non-stress (E2) conditions at two separate fields at Maragheh Dryland Agricultural Research Station in northwest of Iran using RCBD with four replications. Quantitative criteria for stress tolerance such as stress tolerance (TOL), mean productivity (MP), geometric mean productivity (GMP), stress susceptibility index (SSI) and stress tolerance index (STI) were used to assess drought tolerance of fenugreek landraces. Combined analysis of variance for each individual condition showed significant effects of genotypes on grain yield (GY) under E1 and E2 and significant effects under E1 on dry biomass (DB). Ranking of landraces based on GY and DB in both E1 and E2 showed that Ardestan variety has the highest GY and DB stability among the tested landraces. Among the criteria, GMP, STI and MP had positive and highly significant correlations with GY and DB under E1 and are recommended for screening of susceptible and tolerant fenugreek genotypes for drought stress.
