Abstract:

Lipoxygenase-3 (LOX-3) near-isogenic lines of rice (Oryza sativa L.) were obtained by backcrossing, which had similar genetic background while the enzyme activities of LOX-3 were different. Sitophilus zeamais adults responded positively to volatiles emitted from stored rice with LOX-3 in choice between stored rice with LOX-3 and stored rice without LOX-3. However, there was no significant difference when having the choice between fresh rice with LOX-3 and fresh rice without LOX-3. Results from experiment of development assay showed the development and reproductive success of S. zeamais was not influenced by rice grain LOX-3 presence or absence. The results indicated that the loss of LOX-3 was quite related to the tropism of storage insects, the main volatiles of rice grains during storage might be attractant to storage insects. By summing up above results, we can conclude that rice grain’s volatiles produced by LOX-3 during storage are attractant to storage insects, if LOX-3 is absent, that would affect the tropism of storage insects. Therefore, the absence of LOX-3 may be very important in insect resistance in rice grain.
