Abstract:

For safe and sustainable management of waste, it is important to assess the concentrations of plant nutrients during a composting process. Therefore, an experiment was conducted to compare the water solubility of NH4, P and K in animal manure during composting process of 100 days. Samples were taken at 20 days intervals. Results showed that water extractability of nutrients was dependent on process of composting. Manure samples differed for the release of nutrients as K > P > NH4. The amount of NH4 in the waste samples was oppositely related to the days of composting. Peak concentration of P was achieved in the extract during the early days and lowest K was found in later stages of composting. Electrical conductivity was enhanced whereas pH was reduced with composting. Low extractability of nutrients in composted samples may suggest that the use of composted animal waste would be less of water-pollution problem in the fields.
