Abstract:

Drought is considered one of the most deleterious and life threatening phenomenon. It normally starts with the fall of precipitation below the long-term average, which itself is recognized as a meteorological drought. Realizing that it is attempted to establish a mechanism to provide the possibility of recognizing the drought commencement by exploring atmospheric circulation associated with drought. To achieve that goal, effective drought index (EDI) adopted to estimate drought in two northern cities of Babolsar and Ramsar. Then, whenever the index shows that drought is happening, weather conditions have been studied by means of weather charts. The study was carried out for a thirty one year time span starting at 1974 and ending at 2004. Study reveals that there is a very strong negative correlation between the EDI and surface level pressure, 850 hpa temperatures, 500hpa geopotential height, surface relative humidity and temperature.
