Abstract:

The paper performs an efficiency analysis of the Greek poultry industry over the period of 1994-2007. A bootstrapped Data Enveloped Analysis is applied in order to obtain consistent inferences in non-parametric measuring performance. The results show that a loss of the Greek poultry industry competitiveness was accompanied by a high overall inefficiency, which showed an increase from 11% in 1994 to 14% in 2007. The trend of increasing inefficiency in this sector does not stem from the inappropriate production scale and size of the sample firms, as the latter are, in the main, operating at nearly optimal scale and, through, the application of increasing returns technology, many of them have managed to be scale efficient. The increase of the inefficiencies in Greek poultry companies are mostly due to the persistent managerial failure to fully exploit the potential of the technology and the human resources, which in turn supports a trend of decreasing pure technical efficiency. Analysing a firm’s efficiency by size categories reveals that small firms were not inferior to larger ones in terms of performance. The research findings can provide guidelines, which managerial practices and sector policy could usefully apply in order to achieve efficiency of the whole industry as well as that of individual firms.
