Abstract:

We studied the effects of selenium [Se (VI)] on the physiological characteristics of red cabbage plants (Brassica oleracea var. capitata L. f. rubra, cv. Erfurtsko rano) and the ability of the plants to absorb and translocate Se (VI) to different organs. Red cabbage plants were fertilized with selenate solution three weeks after planting. Over the course of the two-month experiment, the soil was fertilized 30 times with Se (VI) 2 µg l-1, or twice with 0.5 mg l-1 Se. Se (VI) was taken up from the soil. Dry matter Se concentrations were 20-1190 ng g-1 in treated plants and 15-30 ng g-1 in controls. Se (VI) was distributed in the order: stems < leaves < roots. Fertilization of the soil with Se (VI) affected plant photosynthesis but did not affect transpiration rate or electron transport system activity. Potential and effective quantum yields of photosystem II (PSII) were unaffected by Se (VI) treatment. Se (VI) had no effect on the amounts of anthocyanins or chlorophyll and . Plants exhibited no visible symptoms of Se (VI) toxicity. Se- enriched red cabbage could be a suitable source of Se for human consumption.
