Effective soil nutrient area of several crops in Northeast China

Abstract:

A new concept of effective soil nutrient area was proposed to optimize the current row width and planting space with the regression method. Field experiments of three widely cultivated crops (maize, soybean and sugar beet) were carried out in Hailun Agro-ecological Experimental Station of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Heilongjiang province, China. The relationship between soil nutrient area and yield per plant was established using regression model. With the established model, the effective soil nutrient area of maize, soybean and sugar beet was calculated as 3251.7, 2837.5 and 3568.4 cm2, respectively. Correspondingly, the effective row space was 57.0, 53.0 and 53.3 cm, respectively. Therefore, the current 67-70 cm ridge width in present farming practice of Northeast China has caused serious wastes of soil resources. The results of the narrow space (55 cm) demonstration experiment showed that the yield of sugar beet and soybean in optimal nutrient area were 19.8% and 12.2% higher than that of present ridge planting system.
