Abstract:

Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) is one of the most important causes of diarrhea in pigs, especially in postweaning piglets throughout the world. Natural products are the major source of leading compounds for drugs against pathogens. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are small, endogenous, polycationic molecules that constitute a ubiquitous and significant component of innate immunity. In this study, we used two kinds of AMPs – lactoferricin B (Lfcin B) and cecropin P1 (Cec P1) to against ETEC. The results showed that Lfcin B and Cec P1 could effectively inhibit the growth of ETEC in vitro. Minimum Inhibition Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Effect Concentration (MEC) of Lfcin B are 0.8µg/ml and 1µg/ml, respectively. MIC and MEC for Cec P1 are the same, which is 0.6µg/ml. The results suggested that Cec P1 was more effective than Lfcin B but there was no statistically significant difference.
