Abstract:

As a fluid flow is encountered with a several obstacles, a boundary layer is formed upstream the obstacles while the flow separation occurs downstream of the boundary layer. Due to the vortex behind obstacles and the natural frequency of water in the channel, a wave is formed in a transversal direction which is technically referred to as transverse wave. The present study focused on the formation of transverse waves on the bed of an open channel. Wooden obstacles were used in the experimental flume set up in a staggered and in-line arrangement on the bed of the flume. After determining hydraulic conditions in maximum wave frequency mode, the amount of sediment transported to downstream affect by transverse waves was specified for wave modes 1 and 2. Also the bed variations were compared in different modes. The results showed that at 70 cm downstream obstacles a ripple bed was formed where most variations were observed in the one-thirds of the side of the channel. Also where fine-grained materials were used, instead of formation of ripple bed the reduction in volume of materials and their suspension was observed.
