Local community perception on the importance of cultural-natural heritage protection and conservation: Case study in Jugra, Kuala Langat, Selangor, Malaysia

Abstract:

Jugra is the royal heritage town which resides numerous cultural and natural heritage assets. All these treasures can be turned into premier assets. Preservation of the heritage assets is beneficial to future generations and local community in terms of social, economics and politics. The local community remains as one of the stakeholders who play an important role in the development of their place. Therefore, a quantitative survey was conducted among respondents aged at least 16 years old and live in Jugra not less than three years. The survey involved a total of 392 respondents who responded well with full answers. The purpose of this survey was to seek local community’s perception on the importance of cultural and natural heritage assets preservation in Jugra. Generally, the result has shown that most of the respondents have better understanding towards the importance of heritage conservation and preservation. This study also found that majority of the respondents gave positive responses to the statement on the importance of preservation of cultural and natural heritage specifically in the study area. They have known that Jugra was formerly an administrative center of Selangor State during the reign of the 4th Sultan of Selangor in the 18th century. Additionally, most of the respondents agreed that the heritage assets in Jugra were valuable and they supported the heritage protection effort in the study area.
