Abstract:

Chemical pest control is one of the most widely used methods in the world. The use, handling, transport, storage, and disposal of pesticides when they were expired require proper standards and practices that could meet health, safety, and environmental standards. This descriptive study was conducted among General Directorate of Crop Protection staff, at Khartoum State to assess the relationship between pesticides and human health. The study included 100 employees at different administrative levels. Acetyl cholinesterase was tested for blood samples for 50 selected persons from the study population. The obtained results showed that, 88.77% of tested females was in the normal range of the enzyme 75-100 compared to 66.66% of the tested males. The obtained results also revealed that, 4.17% of the tested males was in the level 25 - 50 compared to the tested females 0%. Finally, the outcomes of the results confirmed that, there was no cases detected at the lowest level 0-25. The study indicated that 70% of the study population has considerable levels of experience in pesticide field, and our entire studied group did not perform the preliminary medical examination before joining the work, as well as all of them did not conduct any periodic medical examinations. The current study recommended that, conduction of periodic medical examinations for pest control workers especially the level of acetyl cholinesterase enzyme test should be mandatory for the safety of workers in the pest control sector.
